concern about economy

My friends thought about the economy and some concern!

Like most of the others, I am definitely concerned about finding a good job, one where I make enough money to pay off my huge student loan debt. More than that though, I find myself spending a lot of time hoping that I can find something that makes me really happy and doesn’t consume all of my time outside of a 40-hour work week so that I still have time to garden, cook, paint, hike, ski, etc.

I have a few concerns:

1.  I am scared that when I graduate we will still be in a recession and I won’t be able to find a job, let alone a job in an industry I am interested in.

2. I am running a half ironman in a month and I have developed a problem with my iliotibial band and am having trouble running 2 miles without it cramping let alone a half marathon.

I took a job as a ski instructor right after graduation so I could “live the dream” doing what I love.  However, after spending 18 days in a row wearing ski boots for 7 hours throughout the winter season, the LAST thing I wanted to do on my first day off in over half a month was go skiing.  I always felt like I wasn’t hardcore enough, since everyone else wanted to get on the mountain at 8 am any day they weren’t working.

For me, making skiing my job made me lose my love for it.  I debated working part-time this season, but am so glad that I ended up not.  Now when I go back to Vail, it actually feels like a get away, and I am back to loving skiing, and truly appreciating how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful place with access to so many great and natural things.  Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely aspects that I still miss from that life.  But while living there, I just started taking everything for granted.

My undergrad is a Bachelor of Music and now I am in business school.  Although I remain passionate about music, I am thankful that I am not doing it as my profession.  I was unable to balance my love for music and my professinal aspirations.  In the process, I lost my love for performing.  However, now that it has been 3 years, I find myself using many of the skills I learned in music school.  From my experience, you will always have your passion for music and will indirectly use it.

My concern is not so much finding a job as not living up to my potential. I feel like I have had many blessings in my life, external and internal to me, and I want to be able to repay that using the gifts and talents that I have. Like Paul said, I am one of those law students that doesn’t think I want to be a lawyer, but I want to be able to use the legal skills that I have to advocate for others.
